Mahler Symphony No. 5 - Opening Night Gala

Symphony Hall, Boston, MA Boston Symphony Orchestra

Program

  • Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor
  • Richard Strauss
    Don Juan, Op. 20

Program Notes

This performance marked the opening gala of the 2024 season and represented my first collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony holds a special place in my repertoire—its journey from darkness to light mirrors the emotional transformation I seek to convey in every performance.

The program opened with Richard Strauss’s Don Juan, a brilliant tone poem that showcases orchestral virtuosity. This pairing highlighted the contrasts between Strauss’s extroverted heroism and Mahler’s introspective profundity.

Artistic Approach

For this performance, I focused on:

  • Structural clarity: Emphasizing the symphony’s five-movement architecture as three distinct parts
  • Dynamic range: Exploring Mahler’s extreme contrasts from whispered intimacy to full orchestral power
  • The Adagietto: Approaching the famous fourth movement with restraint, honoring its elegiac character

Reception

The performance was met with a standing ovation and extensive critical acclaim. The Boston Globe’s review noted the “meticulous attention to dynamics and profound understanding of the work’s emotional architecture.”
