Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem

Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, PA Philadelphia Orchestra

Program

  • Johannes Brahms
    Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45
Golda Schultz, soprano; Matthias Goerne, baritone

Program Notes

Brahms”s German Requiem represents a deeply personal meditation on mortality and consolation. Unlike the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead, Brahms selected texts from the Lutheran Bible that focus on comforting the living rather than pleading for the deceased.

This performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra and chorus marked a significant milestone in my interpretative journey with this masterwork. The collaboration with soloists Golda Schultz and Matthias Goerne brought exceptional artistry to Brahms”s profound music.

Artistic Approach

Key interpretative focuses included:

  • Textural transparency: Ensuring the choral writing remained clear even in the densest passages
  • Dynamic shaping: Honoring Brahms”s meticulous dynamic markings while maintaining long-term structural momentum
  • Balance: Achieving equilibrium between orchestra, chorus, and soloists in this massive work
